We're Moving to Wyoming!

Friday, June 13, 2014 / Leave a Comment
As an update from this post we have been given a second chance in Wyoming after we declined the first offer. We gladly accepted it and cannot wait to explore a state we have never been to.

The first thing I want to do once we get there?

Star gazing!

It'll be a little bit of a cultural change for us.
Also, we are moving in with my brother, Evan, in Kennewick, Washington thru the end of July until we move to Wyoming. Now we have a place to rest our heads while we wait to transition to our new home! Thank goodness!

Social Media Reality Check

Friday, May 30, 2014 / Leave a Comment
Yep - not all photos of people online are perfect - but my dogs look fantastic!

Inspired by Holly's post from this morning - a Social Media Reality Check:

As Holly said in her post - all too often we are convinced that everyone's life is full of roses and happy little moments (Instagram Moments, as she put it) all the time, but it isn't necessarily what happens behind the social media scenes.

This is my Social Media Reality Check:

I started counting the days of my healthy decisions because I needed control. I desperately need control over something right now. Anything. So I chose my health. I need this control because the Friday before Spring Break Josh was told by the Dean of his department that his teaching contract was not renewed.

This is why we put our house up for sale.

We went into immediate action and started updating his cover letter, curriculum vitae, reference letters, and acquiring his transcripts. The job search (now known as the "Campaign Trail") was on and we found 11 postings in states we would consider living. Arizona, Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Alaska, or Wyoming. Fortunately, there were tons of openings for a Mathematics Instructor... we just had to pick the ones we wanted. After 3 long weeks of interviewing: some 2000 miles driven, 3 Skype interviews, 2 phone interviews, and 4 in-person interviews all while still teaching full time and maintaining a spiritual life we still don't have an answer.

His contract expires in 2 weeks and we have no idea where his next job will be or if there will even be one. The house is *prayers* *fingers crossed* no longer ours in 2 weeks as well so we are also battling the insecurity of not knowing where we are going to live. In my high moments I see the adventure and search for my old spontaneous self. In my low moments (last night) I feel unsafe and lost. We do not have a home. I don't have the security a home has always brought me. I don't know what to plan for and have no idea what our future will bring. I am terrified.

Waiting on colleges to give us a decision, ANY decision - a yes or a no - is the hardest part. We can't sign a lease in Portland because we might get the call to go to Walla Walla. What is the point in renting a place in Roseburg for a month only to pack up and move again?! We have family we can stay with until the dust settles and we can finally make a decision, but then the situation with the cats worries me. How do I make sure they are happy with so much shifting of environment happening for them?!

So yes: I have my happy moments, I smile and I laugh. I have a great time with the people in my life and I post about it. This is the image I want the world to see of me because it is the image I want to remind myself of the most.

Bits of sunshine in a stormy sea.

Day 39: Psoriasis Remedy

Thursday, May 29, 2014 / Leave a Comment

20 minutes, once a week to battle the psoriasis on my elbows, back, stomach, and legs.

Since we moved up to Roseburg 3 yrs ago September, I have developed massive psoriasis. Nothing helped. We assume it wass the water since we use well water which is processed through a water softener.

Anyway, in December I decided to go tanning to see if it would work - and it did!! It has slowly, but surely begun to go away. My legs are almost completely clear, my back is down to about 25% coverage, elbows are smooth (but still dry), and my stomach is healing nicely!

Such an easy remedy and I get a nap in too!!!

Took the babes to the beach and played in the water.
My mom came to stay with my for the weekend and so we went to play. There may have been a doughnut consumed at some point - I'm not sure. This day was followed by yard work - lots of yard work!

Day 34: Keep your eyes on your own paper, Jaymee!

Thursday, May 22, 2014 / Leave a Comment
There is no need to compare yourself to someone else!!!
This is one of my coworkers, whose bodily composition is naturally petite. I caught myself mentally drifting off wondering how much she was lifting and comparing my abilities to hers. *tisk* *tisk* Fortunately, I witnessed these thoughts and was able to redirect them into acknowledging that we are all on our own path to good health.

Day 34 cont: Some truth

I don't know how much I weighed when I started, but my plateau weight the last few years has been an unhealthy (for me) 165lbs. I hypothesize that I was closer to 170 when I started. Here we see me at 158. I am under 165 for the first time in 4 years. Typically, I don't care about a number, about weight. I care about how I feel physically, mentally, and emotionally about my health. Today I was curious and stepped on the scale for the first time in a very long time. No matter what that number would have been, today I feel great!

Day 25: A Moment of Truth

Monday, May 12, 2014 / 1 comment
Everyday, by acknowledging at least ONE healthy decision I have made, I am making progress. A few people have been asking me what I am doing to get where I want to be. It is simple really...

  • I am eating less food - portion control.
  • I have quit eating dairy - something which is delicious, but bloats me and makes me feel sluggish
  • I am on a mostly vegetarian diet - meat has been too heavy and also makes me feel sluggish. (Seafood is still on the menu)
  • I am bringing healthy snacks with me to work - like pistachios and chopped veggies
  • I have cut out refined sugar - except for the occasional small piece of dark chocolate.
  • And I'm exercising - only 45 minutes a day: squats, crunches, short yoga, and arms/back
  • Lastly, I am working on cleaning up my digestive system. I highly recommend Dr. Christopher's Lower Bowell formula.
It might seem like a lot, but it really isn't. Just little changes to every day life that are going a long way. I feel lighter on my feet, my clothes are fitting me better (I went down a shirt size!), and I am encouraging others to make healthy decisions too!

My daily photos, the actual paying attention to a healthy choice is helping me stay motivated! It is challenging me to make creative decisions because you all can only handle so many photos of my legs doing stuff!

Confessional: 10.9.2012

I know. I know. Look at the last time I posted which, honestly, looks like I haven't been exercising in the last 2 months. Sadly, it is nearly true. When we went to Arizona I lost my focus and got out of my routine. I did go to a gym and ran through as many of my exercises as I could without getting down onto the dirty floor. I let my diet go as well because I thought, "Hey! I'm on vacation, let's splurge." I can happily say, though, that I drank LOTS of iced green tea and spent a lot of time with long lost friends.

For the last two weeks I have been teaching yoga, an hour and twenty minutes twice a week at the college. This is great because it is getting me back into my yoga-zone and letting me know how much my body has changed in the last 2 months.

I have some serious work to do.

That being said, I have reached my limit. I cannot wait any longer. I MUST do something about this body and the way I have been feeling.

My energy level has been low, I've been feeling despondent and easily distracted. Emotional doesn't even cover it. PLUS, I feel terribly bloated because I've been consuming dairy at a rate comparable to a calf and salty snacks.

My diet needs to change.

I have signed up for Staff Fitness at the college allowing me to use the weight room and exercise equipment. I am really looking forward to doing this on the other days of the week that I'm not doing yoga.

Yesterday marked my first day dairy free. I am saddened because that means no more cheese and I really, really love cheese. But I will survive. Now I need to find some healthy, crunchy snacks to keep in my office while I work.

This is progress. I am excited to get back on the path to feeling amazing and healthy. Please join me in the adventure!

Confessional-ish: 8.8.2012

Wednesday, August 8, 2012 / Leave a Comment
H and I are going to Arizona for two weeks at the end of this month which means my routine is really going to go bonkers.

I plan on doing a yoga intensive while down there at the yoga studio (Spirit of Yoga- Tempe, Az) I received my yoga instructor training and certification from. I am really, really looking forward to this. They have an Iyengar inspired Yoga Wall that I have been coveting all year since leaving Arizona last September. I cannot wait to give it a go. Also, Gong Yoga has been calling my name since before I left, so I will surely be experiencing that as soon as possible.

My diet will be the hardest to control once we are there since there is so much food we miss and want to get a taste of while we have the opportunity. Portion control will be my best friend. Wish me luck!

Hopefully, H and I will be able to get into the Naturopath Clinic at SCNM to get help with separate things (his allergies and sinuses, my psoriasis). Only $80 for an office visit with a Naturopath. Not. Bad. Especially when it is an office visit that actually results in some type of beneficial therapy such as acupuncture!

On top of that, H's mother is a hypnotherapist. I am really looking forward to spending some time with her and talking about possibly getting some help with some old emotional baggage I have been carrying around with me for... well... my entire life.

Visiting with family, good friends, working on my wellbeing from all directions, and eating delicious food. This is going to be a wonderfully simple trip!

Blessings,

Confessional: 8.7.2012

Well I started my new (very) part time job this week... today actually... and I have to say that it has wreaked havoc on my routine. My pill routine is completely upset. My exercise routine is pretty much out the window since I have to be out the door by 8:00AM these days... (I know, 8AM? My life is so rough).

On the up-side to it all, I have a new job that will bring in some extra cash to the family so we can save up for things we need around the property.... like wood and a glass for a green house and a second vehicle and manure and tools. Be jealous of our glamorous life! (Manure! Yay!)

The other up-side is that I am actually getting up at a decent hour. A legitimately decent hour! It is really nice to have that structure and I hope I can keep with it on my days off.

My diet is improving, but still needs a lot of work. I am getting there.

Exercises are now being moved to evenings; afternoons if I can. I should do them right when I get home so that I have time to relax in the evening with H and the dogs. This way I make sure they get done and I don't break the habit!

Also, I think I need to add a box to my template for my Daily Health Confessions that states: "What I need to work on." This way I can encourage myself to improve while also holding myself accountable for perhaps not making the right decisions on diet or exercise or wellbeing (emotional, mental, spiritual, etc.) that day.

Everyday is an improvement on the day before. I must remember that. I am doing so much more than I was 3 weeks ago. For that, I am very proud.

I did not work out today. Instead, we had brunch at our house with 6 dear friends, spent most of the early afternoon with them laughing, telling stories, and catching up. It was a day of good food: Pancakes, bacon, hash brown casserole, and orange juice. A day of wellbeing. It was wonderful.

Side Note: I am very proud of myself for not over eating at breakfast. H's pancakes are hard to resist!

Confessional: The Next Morning

Friday, July 20, 2012 / Leave a Comment

As I turned out the lights to go to sleep I set my alarm for 8:30 with the intention of waking up early and going to the local high school to run around their track.

This morning, 8:30 came along as did the snooze button. I eventually woke up at 10:30 feeling groggy, heavy, and bloated. Not a good start. But I can't chastise myself for this. I must move on.

I saw a “quick warm-up” exercise a friend had Pinned online the other day and decided to try it out. A little exercise is better than no exercise, right?! So after taking some time to wake up a little, I tried it out:

Exercise:
Feeling/Reaction:
50 Jumping Jacks
Felt good, fun.
5 Push Ups
I couldn't lower all the way down and come back up, had to stay at about 105* angle.
20 Crunches
I did elbow to opposite knee because I couldn't get all the way up doing them the regular way. Twenty crunches on each side. Felt great.
20 Mountain Climbers
20 was definitely my limit.
30 Second Plank
I'm really good at this one because of yoga.

After I had my heart rate up (believe me, it was up!), I felt motivated to keep going. So I threw some yoga clothes on and my running shoes and decided to do a few laps around the house. I set the goal of 10 laps, taking the outside stretch of the backyard and driveway to add more distance to my lap. While our house isn't that big and I really have no idea how far I ran, it winded me and made me sweat. I have to admit, I hate running. I always have hated running. It has always felt purposeless for me, but I did it today because I have been craving a good jog for a while now.

I say that I have had this craving and confess that I never indulged it. But you bet your buttons I have indulged every food craving I have had since the summer began! I always had excuses, like the fact the we live on a highway so it isn't safe to go running or that it would require a track at the high school to be beneficial. I imagined that jogging around my house wouldn't do anything for me. Well, I can say, 10 laps later and it has already done something for me! I kept going:

Exercise:
Feeling/Reaction:
10 Laps Around House, Running
My pattern went as follows:
Run 3
Walk 1
Run 2
Walk 1
Run 3
Walk 2
Run 2
Winded, sweating, hips and leg muscles feel loose.
Cool Down, Walk in Opposite Direction
I didn't count how many I did. I stopped when I felt like doing something else. My heart rate had relaxed a bit by then.
30 Stair Steps
15 on each leg. Could have done more, but was ready to move on to the next idea.
20 Stair Hops
Fun, very rigid at first, off balance. At 15 I began to notice myself get into a rhythm. Twenty felt like my limit.
5 Lunges
Five was my limit. I need to work on this.

While I was doing all of this I was taking note of how I felt. This is something that yoga has taught me. I am allowing myself to feel and acknowledge, become aware, of how my body feels as I do each exercise.

Today I feel: 7.5
Hungry, loose, awake, bloated, heavy.

After today, I will be posting (hopefully daily) quick template formatted Health Confessional Entry so that I can view my progress over time in an organized and straight forward way. I might also post separate entries regarding my feelings, opinions, and realizations regarding our society and healthy living. Only time will tell.

Thank you for joining me in my journey and helping me remain accountable.

My goal is to be healthy.

What is yours?

Confessional: The Beginning

I think it is time to admit something to myself.

I'm not healthy. I don't feel healthy, I don't appear to be healthy, I don't treat my body with the respect it deserves. I am not healthy.

Before I go any further, I feel it is imperative that I explain what my definition of healthy is.

You will not see me talk about my weight here. I do not know how much I weigh, nor do I care because weight, to me, is nothing but a number. It is a number that controls us; sends us into self doubting spirals of depression or offers us unrealistic goals of what “beauty” is. No. I will not talk about weight here. Nor will I talk about going on a diet, but rather, I will dedicate myself to changing my diet.

Instead, I will talk about health. Health is a feeling and it can be good or bad.

I once had a Complementary Medicine Instructor ask our class what our definition of health was by placing a notch on a scale he had drawn on the dry erase board. This scale went from “Death” to “Alive”. We each took our turns placing a notch on the scale, all ending up at the midpoint and onward toward “Alive.” Our instructor proceeded to explain to us that every moment of every day between life and death we are experiencing a state of health. Some days we feel healthier than others and some days we don't feel healthy at all. But even death is a state of health... it is the complete lack of health that creates the condition of death. This concept blew my mind.

Typically, when we think of health we automatically think of it in terms of reaching the positive, whatever that positive end goal is. We perceive ourselves as unhealthy or not healthy which in translation means: a lack of health. It means that this health does not exist. This idea is false because health always exists, we are just in a constant changing state of it.

So my definition of health can be found on a scale: 1 = “Death”......5 = “Existing”....... 10 = “Alive”. Every day, my feelings can change regarding this scale. While I hope I never feel like death, my goal is to feel alive every chance I can.

Currently, I have been merely existing. Without much reason to get up in the morning since my husband and I are on summer vacation, we simply don't. We go to bed late and wake up, eventually, around 10:30 or 11 in the morning. We have become sloth-like in nature. Playing online, surfing the internet for mindless entertainment, taking naps, and reading books on the couch. Sometimes we do yard work and sometimes we work on painting our kitchen cabinets (an on-going project we started back in June!) We eat whatever we want without thinking about what we are eating. The worst of it is, I'm a yoga instructor and I haven't done yoga in about a month and a half and I can tell.

This is our first summer vacation as adults, my husband teaches mathematics at a community college and I teach yoga there, as well. We hardly know what to do with ourselves without such structure in our lives as a job to tell us to wake up and get going. Somehow, we have to find the motivation ourselves and get back on track.

Last night I went to bed after eating homemade chicken enchiladas (which were amazing and delicious, but filled with dairy) and watching a movie, my husband and I decided to turn in (at about 2 AM). Before I went to bed I did three sun salutations. I'm not sure why I felt inspired to do them, but I did and was shocked at how stiff and weak I had become. The backs of my knees felt on fire as I did ahdo mukah savasana (downward facing dog) and uttanasana (standing forward fold). I wasn't able to hold chataranga (lowered plank) as long as I used to and I won't even get into my virabadrasanas (warriors).

Hello, wake-up call!
